BEACH BOYS THE lyrics

HISTORY OF THE GROUP

AMERICA'S  BAND

The Beach Boys started the California sound with their surfing music and car songs. They were our main defense against the British Rock invasion of the early 60's.The Group was the top music group in 1962 and 1963  and still did great after the British Invasion in 1964. The group has been called the influential band in rock and pop music history. The group began as " Kenny And The Cadets" , then " Carl And The Passions " and finally as " The Pendletones" until their first record company Candix Records changed their name to The Beach Boys.  The members of the group were the brothers, who were Brian, Dennis ,and Carl Wison ,plus their cousin Mike Love and Brian's high school friend, Al Jardine. Brian loved the group called "The Four Freshman" and study the music from them and made the boys learn his methods.  The group recorded their single "Surfin" in 1961 when their parents went on a trip to Mexico and they took the money the parents left them and rented instruments. When their father came home he took the song to Hite Morgan since Murray Wilson did have one  song which Lawrence Welch recorded so he was familiar with the business. Murray became their manager until 1964 when Brian fired his father. Murray went out to JC Penny's and bought the stripe shirts the group wore. Dennis was the only Beach Boy who was into the sport of surfin" . Dennis was the inspiration to many of Brian's songs since he was the wild one of the group. The group had a string of successful albums which we are all familiar with. The albums were "Surfin Safari" , "Surfin USA", Surfer Girl", " Shut Down Volume 2", "Little Deuce Coupe"," All Summer Long" "Beach Boys Party", "The Beach Boys Today", "Summer Days and Summer Nights!!", "Beach Boys Concert" which had several hits on each album. The group had many two sided hits such as "Surfin", on the A side and "409" on the B side. Another Inspiration for Brian with his songs was his girlfriend Judy Bowles which was the inspiration for Brian 's songs called Judy and Surfer Girl . In 1965, Brian decided to stop touring and go further with his music. The first song we were given at this time was the song "California Girls'  and Brian music just grew from this point. This is when we were rewarded with the American Masterpiece -Pet Sounds. This album changed music forever with an instrumental change of chords ,different instruments and other things, they formed a sound never heard before. The next step was the one which took the Beach Boys past what the Beatles had done and made them the number one band in the world ,it was "Good Vibrations". This was the most expensive single ever made ,of this era, and took six weeks to make while utilizing five different studios. The next step for the group was their album, "Smile", which is in my opinion, the most famous unreleased album ever. Due to many conflicts between the boys and Brian and some personal problems of Brian's the album was never released. There are many different bootlegs of the "Smile" album. Instead the group released "Smiley Smile" an album which was a compromise of what the original album was to be .Atthis point the group's popularity went down due to the psychedelic music which was now popular and this is what Brian had started with the song Good Vibrations and the Album Smile so it was very ironic. The group then went on to record other albums for Capitol which were of a different style ,such as "Wild Honey" ,"Friends", "20/20" and they are enjoyable listening music. These albums contained such hits as "Darlin" ,"Do It Again" ,"I Can Hear Music" as well as many other incredible songs. The group then switched record labels and released another great album "Sunflower" ,which I feel is a very underrated album .Then the group released some of the best material of this era, which was "Surfs Up" ,"Holland", "Beach Boys in Concert" ,and "Carl and the Passions". The group again switched labels and recorded much more good music with albums such as "Love You","15 Big Ones" ,"MIU" ,"Keepin The Summer Alive", "LA Light" and in 1985, "The Beach Boys". The group went back to Capitol for their "Still Cruisin" album which included the hit "Kokomo" and then they made the albums "Summer in Paradise" and "Stars and Stripes". The Beach Boys are still recording today and are still a top concert group throughout the world. Brian may record with them again but he has recently touring with his new band and recording new material on his own.  In the history of the Beach Boys ,there were only two official videos made, the first is called "American Band" and the second is called "Endless Harmony" ,which has a excellent audio cd by the same name.

In the 1990's Brian's daughters carnie and Wendy were two thirds of the group called Wilson-Phillips . This group had many hits such as Hold On/Release Me and the song which brought their father back to them ,Flesh and Blood.  The girls called "The Wilsons", Brian Wilson and his daughters, Carnie and Wendy sing "Everything I Need" (written with Tony Asher ,Brian's main lyricist on Pet Sounds), a remake of "'Til I Die," and a song called "Sweetie." on a album just the two sisters released.  Brian has finally  completed work on his solo album SMILE. Brian has completed a few solo albums listed on this page.  Brian is now recording a album called 'That Lucky Old Sun"

Dennis Wilson died in 1983 on a friend's sailboat and Carl Wilson passed away from cancer in early 1998. Al Jardine has started work on a solo album ,with his sons Matt and Adam. He is currently performing with his new group, Endless Summer Band and has toured with Brian Wilson band also.   He original toured with a group Called Beach Boys Family and Friends until he was sued by Mike Love who presently owns the name of The Beach Boys.  That group included his  sons ,Matt and Adam ,Brian's daughters ,Carnie and Wendy, Cass Elliot's daughter, Owen, and band members, Daryl Dragon ,Billy Hinsche ,Ed Carter & Ritchie Canata ,but will return to play with the Beach Boys. Mike Love is currently touring with the Beach Boys with Bruce Johnston, lead guitarist, David Marks and Adrian Baker.

MIDDLE-AGED SYMPHONIES TOWARDS GOD:

                                                                                                                                                                                                 The Beach Boys’ BROTHER Years

BY GARY PIG

Yes indeed, it goes without saying that Brian Wilson and his familial band full of brothers, cousins and friends have enjoyed a career quite unlike any other across the cuckoo annals of show business.  Scoring a local hit in 1961 straight off the mark with their very first little indie single, then soon after placing a sophomore release into no less than the hallowed Billboard Hot One Hundred – and all at a time when the majority of the band still had to be home in time to attend class the next morning – The Beach Boys, it could be argued, really started their marathon run at the very tip-top, suicidally crash-dove towards oblivion a few short years later, and only THEN slowly but surely began their struggle up the ladder of  ever-lasting fame, fortune and, ultimately, all-American glory …and just in time to score an invite to play the Reagan White House, need I remind anyone.

Which just all goes to show, I suppose, that blood surely is thicker than any critic’s ink, what gets around (from town to town) comes around and that, most obviously, Brian Wilson near single-in-handedly created a body of work which can surely withstand the most brutal scourges of both time and fashion.  To prove that point, even Mike Love’s current touring “Beach Boys” [sic!] can still draw a healthy enough crowd on any given Saturday night, weather and authorities permitting.

That’s why it’s sometimes hard to fathom that there was indeed a time, roughly between 1966 and 1975, when The Beach Boys truly hit rock ‘n’ roll bottom and were forced to really, really hustle their sunkist butts long and hard to keep everyone’s musical and financial heads above water, proverbially speaking.  Bleak, sorry years when this once Beatle-caliber band were reduced to hauling their act out on the road and into midwestern VFW halls alongside that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.  A pitiful period when their latest brave creations were routinely being scorned in favor of those from The Archies and even Grand Funk Railroad.  This was, in fact, a harrowing era when (as no less a numbers man as Bruce Johnston Himself continues to recall) America’s Band could scarcely draw two hundred paying patrons to a series of gala performances within the very heart of New York City.

In a word then?  Yikes!

Of course any other combo with half its wits intact would’ve called it quits right about then – or at least ditched the “Surfin’ Safari” stagewear for starters.  But The Beach Boys were more than just another pop group, weren’t they?  They were a FAMILY, first and foremost, and rather than remain one-upped by their musical neighbors so to speak, this musical household doggedly set about getting their affairs back in order, persisting along this rugged path for year after endless year …even when all around seemed hapless, hopeless, and far, far from harmonious.  On ANY level.

Actually finding themselves without an American recording contract at the dawn of the Seventies, and with their guiding musical light apparently more interested in snoozing than writing, arranging, singing and/or producing, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, and even those afore-mentioned Mike and Bruce guys had no logical choice but to settle down to some good old-fashioned, decorum-be-damned hard hard work, lest they find themselves forever tossed upon the scrap-heap of One Hit Wonderdom.  So first of all, every Boy still awake and mobile began by bringing the audio mountain to Mohammed, constructing a working studio directly beneath Brian’s Bel Air bedroom (not that that helped motivate their big brother much in the long run: nice try, though).  Then they boldly formed their own record company and, crazier still, set about writing and recording a string of albums which form not only the mysterious, mythical candy core of The Beach Boys’ vast sea of tunes, but in retrospect actually hold much more than their own against such bally-hoo’ed, Nixon-vintage contemporaries as the Eagles, Doobies, and even that Buckingham/Nicks-model Big Mac.

Available once again in a expertly packaged, lovingly annotated and – it’s about time – sonically up-graded series of twofers from the good folk over at Capitol, these half-dozen releases compiling the entire output of The Beach Boys’ “lost years” (off their own Brother Records imprint) are literally jam-packed with dozens upon dozens of gems you probably haven’t heard in years – for example, the once mega-maligned SO TOUGH album from ’72 now sounds like no less than Carl and his Passions tackling BIG PINK Band by way of Paul Buckmaster! -- or, in some cases, gems you might have even over-looked altogether.

Chronologically speaking, the initial Brother albums SUNFLOWER and SURF’S UP remain  among the most universally cherished records on the planet (just ask David Bash!), and both contain their fair share of Brian Wilson treasures for the ages – “This Whole World” and “Til I Die” most particularly – which rank easily amongst the very best Our Hero has yet to offer us all.  Meaning, must I say, they’re some of the greatest musical works ever created by man or beast.  The two junior Wilsons blossom forth on these albums as well (“Long Promised Road” and “Feel Flows” prove Carl learned his lessons fully whilst attending all those PET SOUNDS and SMiLE sessions; Dennis, conversely – as always – forged his own musical identity within SUNFLOWER somewhere between the cock-rockin’ “Got To Know The Woman” and the heart-drenched passion of “Forever”).  Meanwhile, that then-new 16-track technology at work throughout allowed the band to layer on those heavenly, heavenly harmonies as never before.  Or, in truth, since.  “Cool, Cool Water,” to mention just one, contains chorale cascades which will continue to astound the ear today, three decades (and countless attempts at recreation) since they were first meticulously piled onto tape.

Suffice to say, the music The Beach Boys made in the very early Seventies remains amongst their very, very best, and no listener out there, discriminating or otherwise, should let these sounds slip past unheard a single minute longer.

Despite the odd (in more ways than one) moment thereafter however – and again, I cite such B. Wilson concoctions as HOLLAND’s notorious Fairy Tale “Mt. Vernon And Fairway” plus the entire proto-punk BEACH BOYS LOVE YOU album – the band’s post-1972 output is, well, spotted indeed.  Still, works of total wonder are to be found even on such universally poo-poohed efforts as 15 BIG ONES (just listen to the slap-happy vocal counterpoint which ends “It’s O.K.”), KEEPIN’ THE SUMMER ALIVE (with its B.T.O.-on-the-beach title track co-written by, you guessed it, none other than Randy Bachman) and even the lowly M.I.U. ALBUM (…awrite awrite, so I for one believe “Hey Little Tomboy” to be a hunka hunka fluff of near Jonathan Richman pedigree).

Nevertheless, with a band as diverse and musically all-encompassing as The Beach Boys, one just has to take the good with the not-quite-so-good:  after all, these characters have always been, if nothing else, totally fearless in the way they conduct themselves both inside and outside of the recording studio.  Besides, one must also remember that this music was being created and released back in the glorious days when rock ‘n’ roll bands were not only allowed to be adventurous, but could even get such fits of fancy released and often promoted to the public at large.

Proving once again that still waters do indeed run so, so deep, The Beach Boys’ Brother Years sonically document a band – and a family – in quite desperate creative and emotional upheaval, yet producing some of its best if least-known work despite (or is it because?) of such all-around adversities.

For awhile then at least, without a doubt, the family that Sang together STAYED together.

For awhile.

 Listen, listen, listen…

High School: Hawthorne High School, Hawthorne, CA -- Al Jardine was on the football team with Brian Wilson

Marilyn Wilson Was Brian's first wife and she was 16 years old when he meet her.

Dennis Wilson was the only Beach Boy to surf.

It was Dennis Wilson idea to write a song about surfin.

Brian got many inspirations from Dennis wild life to write songs such as Fun Fun Fun and many surfin songs.

Murray Wilson was the manager of the Beach Boys and was fired by his son Brian during the recording of I get Around.

Dennis married a girl which was claimed to be his Cousin Mike Love kid.

Brian had a sandbox in his living room with his white grand piano in it and a text in the dinning room for meetings in his Be lair mansion.

SEA OF TUNES

Sea  of Tunes was a music Publishing Company which the group was most likely the first rock group with such a company. Sea of Tunes was founded by Murry Wilson , Father of three of the Beach Boys, Brian ,Dennis and Carl. The object of the company is to promote and publish the original songs written by Brian and Mike.

After being fired by his son Brian in 1964 as the group's manager he continued to serve as their publisher until he sold Sea of Tunes to A&M Records in 1969 for $750,000 . Murry believed that the band 's days had peaked due to this was their low point in their career. Both Brian and Mike were furious that he sold it without telling them.   This was also the era you hear about as Brian was going into his era just laying in bed.  Even upon Murry's death Carl was the only son to show up due to this and all the child abuse etc in their life.  Brian Wilson did sued to get his songs back but failed but did receive a $25 million dollar settlement from the company.  Then Mike Love sued Brian for his portion of the royalties and he received $13 million from Brian.

Murray was the Wilson boys father and originally became the boys manager until Brian Wilson fired him during the recording of I get Around.

Do to Murray like to interfere so much Capitol had a fake sound board made up for the studio.   Only Carl Wilson attended his father funeral and Brian and Dennis decided not to attend the funeral. Originally after being fired by his sons he formed a group called The Sunrays who had a few hits.

                                      SUNFLOWER ALBUM

Sunflower is sometimes said to be the group's Pet Sound album and is regarded as a top all time album as it made the top listing on Rolling Stone Top 500 All-time albums. The album was the first album released on the new label for the group REPRISE and was released in 1970.  A major part of the record deal was that Brian be a major part of recording and that he take it seriously . He showed up to sign the contract with a painted green face and they signed the group away.  Also as part of this deal the record label would use the group's record company Brothers Records.

Sunflower Included many great songs such as, Slip On Through , This Whole World , Add Some Music , Got To Know The Woman , Deirdre , It's About Time , Tears In The Morning , All I want To Do , Forever , Our Sweet Love , At My Window, and Cool , Cool Cool, Water.   Forever is differently known as one of Dennis Wilson's greatest songs. The song Cool , Cool  Water was taking from the water chat on the Smile album and Brian turned it into a great song. Add Some Music to Your Day was one of Brian's favorite songs. The album is credited to the entire group as the producer.

BROTHERS RECORDS

Brother Records Inc is a record label and holding company formed in October of 1966. This means it is the company which holds all rights to the Beach Boys trademark including their name. This company was original formed so Brian could release other music besides his Beach Boys music.  He started recording with a group called Redwood but the group wanted the songs for their own album. The group Redwood did quit Brother Records and went to another label and changed their name to Three Dog Night.
The shareholders of this company in 1966 were the Wilson Brothers , Brian Carl, And Dennis along with the other two Beach Boys Mike Love and Al Jardine.  In 1983 when Dennis passed away his estate was force to sell the shares back to the company due to the outstanding debt left by Dennis. In 1998 when Carl passed away his shares went to his estate.
The label was the first label owned by a Rock Group and was formed even before the Beatles formed Apple. Brother Records first release was the single Heroes and Villians and then the album Smiley Smile and were distributed by Capitol Records.  The Group used Brother Records throughout their career with Reprise Records and Caribou Records and is presently using Brother Records to release the albums they have recorded throughout their career with Capitol Records distributing the albums.
David Anderle was hired to run the organization.

GOOD VIBRATIONS -THE SINGLE

The Single was released in October of 1966 and was 3:39 in length  and was considered a Psychedelic pop single. The single was released with "Let's Go Away For awhile ' which was a song from the group's Pet Sounds album since this is when Brian started working on this song.  The Song went to #1 in the US and the UK. Brian Wilson's publicist Derek Taylor described the song as a POCKET SYMPHONY probably in reference to the many tempo changes throughout the song. The song used many unusual instruments for a Rock Song. In the song you will hear a Cello as well as an electro-theremin. The song was listed as #6 on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Song Good Vibrations is part of the The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame 's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll the idea for the song came from Brian's mother telling him that dogs could feel the good vibrations from you.  Originally Brian used his lyricist Tony Asher who helped him with his album Pet Sounds. Mike Love did not like the chorus of the song so he re-wrote it just before the group recorded it. On Brian's 2004 SMILE album Brian used the original version of the song .  This is the song where Brian started his new method of recording as he editor the parts of the song together.  The Beatles claim that the later recorded songs by them were inspired by Brian's methods. They are referring to such songs as Strawberry Fields and A day In the Life. The Production of the song Good Vibrations was reported to have spanned seventeen recording sessions at four different studios and used 90 hours of tape. The song was the most expensive single ever recorded at the time costing$50,000 . Brian is credited with developing the use of the recording studio as a instrument. During these sessions Brian used a famous session band called the Wrecking Crew. Good Vibrations was nominated for a Grammy in 1966 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1994.

GOD ONLY KNOWS

The Song God Only Knows was the B side of the single Wouldn't It be Nice . In the UK the Song God Only Knows was a larger hit but in the USA many radio stations refused to play the song due to it was first song with the word "GOD" in it. With this song Brian used the beautiful voice of his brother Carl on lead vocals. The Beatles song "Here There and Everywhere" was inspired by this Brian Wilson song as John and Paul listen to Pet Sounds at a party back at Lennon's house.

GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT I WOULD BE WITHOUT YOU!

   BARBARA-ANN-- THE SONG
        Plus Other Song Trivia

The song Barbara-Ann was recorded for the album called "Party" which was just that a party with some friends and their wives and kids. Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean actual sang lead vocal on this song.
The song was released by Capitol without notification to the group as they were trying to change their image to a more serious group.
COTTON FIELDS--was a single released in 1969 which went to #1 in many countries but did not even make the Top 100 in the USA
SURFIN' -- The group first song was originally written by Brian for H.S. Music class and he received a F on the song!!
I CAN HEAR MUSIC-- was the first hit single by the group without Brian's help.  Phil Spector produced the song.
Lady Lynda - was a Al Jardine hit in many countries including the UK where it went to #1 but did not do as well in the USA
GOD ONLY KNOWS  was a large hit in the UK but not that large of hit in the USA due to some radio stations would not play it due to it had the word God in the title.
KOKOMO-- Is the single which went to #1 in 1988 . The song was written by Mike Love/John Phillips /  Terry Melcher   and was the only #1 song which Brian Wilson did not write for the group. During the same era Brian released his solo song "Love and Mercy" a truly great song but did not due that well commercially.

The Survivors

The Survivors were a studio-only group that did a one-off single in early 1964, "Pamela Jean"/"After the Game." It's a coveted release by Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fans, however, as Wilson wrote and produced both sides and was one of the singers on the record as well. "Pamela Jean," which combines doo wop, Brian Wilson pop, and an extremely Phil Spector-esque production, actually has the exact same melody as "Car Crazy Cutie," which the Beach Boys had released in 1963 on their Little Deuce Coupe album. "After the Game" is a lush, almost easy listening instrumental ballad that anticipated some directions Wilson's music would take (with fuller production) on the arrangements used for the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. Although it has been written that the Survivors were the Beach Boys recording under a pseudonym, according to the liner notes to the CD compilation Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions (which includes both sides of the single), the Survivors were Brian Wilson and his friends Bob Norberg, Dave Nowlen, and Richard Alarian.

CHARLES MANSON

                     CHARLES

                                                                     DENNIS

In 1968 Dennis Wilson was driving down a road in Malibu when he noticed two girls hitchhikers. He picked them up and took them back to his place.  Dennis then went to a recording session and when he returned home in the middle of the night he found a dozen girls there and a small little man there by the name of Charles Manson. Manson wanted to become a singer/song writer and eventually got Dennis to have the Beach Boys record one of his songs by the name of ' Never learn Not To love' which was the B side of the Beach Boys single Bluebirds Over The Mountain and made it to #61 on the charts.  Manson took Dennis for over 100K during the time period he was living in Dennis 's house. As the first thing in Charles Manson life was to become a singer he was introduce to a friend of Dennis a producer named Terry Melcher ( son of Doris Day) Manson thought he could get Melcher to help him but he did not!! Terry Melcher and mark Lindsay of The Raiders both lived in the house but Terry decided to rent the house to a few girls by the name of Tate and LaBianca  but Manson was not aware of this. the Manson Family as they are referred to came to the house and murdered the Tate and LaBianca girls were murdered.  Manson is still in jail today for this . Dennis did not testify in the Manson trial but he said he knew the reason why Manson did what he did and would tell someday . However in 1983 Dennis passed away suddenly so the secret never was told.

I CAN HEAR MUSIC , SWEET SWEET MUSIC

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

      Maharishi Vedic University

During the 1960s and early 1970s practitioners of the technique began to be seen as part of the then current "counter-culture" phenomenon. Also during that time, a number of celebrities that included The Beatles,[19] the Beach Boys, (including singer Mike Love,[20] who became a TM teacher) and singer-songwriter Donovan, who befriended Maharishi and put his picture on the back cover of his A Gift from a Flower to a Garden album,  Alot of the Beatles White Album was written in India while with the Maharishi.   The song Back In the USRR was written there by paul but mike love said he gave Paul some ideas on how to make the Beatles song with The Beach Boys sound.  John Lennon said he had heard the Maharishi had made some improper advances towards young girls and left. The other major factor referring to John is that when they were leaving for India his first wife Cynthia did not make it through the crowds and that was the last John saw her. Out of this era the strangest thing is that it Was the Beach Boys who took the Maharishi on tour and they went to the south of the USA  and were boo off of stage with him. The Beach boys did write a few songs on the TM methods throughout the years.

 TRIVIA NOTE ABOUT PET SOUNDS!

PETS SOUNDS was voted #1 all-time album by the musicians industry
PETS SOUNDS was voted #3 by VH-1 for the all-time albums
The album was voted #1 by Mojo and #2 by Rolling Stone for the all-time greatest albums. The album included the hit singles "Sloop John B"  , Wouldn't It Be Nice"  , and the song "God Only Knows"

When Mike Love first heard the music he said" who will listen to this shit?" Capitol Records almost did not release the album. Capitol even released The groups first greatest hits album 8 weeks after the release of Pet Sounds. Brian's original thought was to beat The Beatles album Rubber Soul which Brian did and then The Beatles admitted that pet Sounds inspired them to record Srgt Peppers. Brian was force to fight for his album and went to a meeting with Capitol with a tape player and had a rolling tape of a few phases such as Can You repeat that? and the words yes and No and refuse to say a word during the meeting!!! most think Brian had to start his fighting with SMILE album but that is not true he had to fight for pet Sounds also. Brian Wilson's dog, banana , was on the album plus the original name of the album was Barking Dogs. The album Pet Sounds changed the sound of the Beach Boys from the early-sixties sound fun in the sun hits.  From here brian went onto his greatest song Good vibrations and then was moving on to but another great album called SMILE until all the fighting broke him.

This is the Beach Boys Pet Sounds Album which many people say changed the course of music forever. This is definitely Brian Wilson's American Masterpiece Album and has been voted the Greatest album of All Time!!!

SONG LISTING

1--Wouldn't It Be Nice
2-- You Still Believe In Me
3-- That's Not Me
4-- Don't Talk ( Put Your Head On My Shoulders)
5-- I'm Waiting For The Day
6-- Let's Go Away For Awhile
7-- Sloop John B
8-- God Only Knows
9-- I know There's An Answer
10- Here Today
11- I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
12- Pet Sounds
13- Caroline No

Pet Sounds Trivia

1-- The group came back from their world tour and Brian had this album ready to have the boys voices to put on the recording and they did not like the major changes but finally agree to record the album .

2-- The Song PET SOUNDS was original made and submitted to be a theme on a James Bond Movie but the movie turned Brian down.

3-- Brian released his first solo single from this album as he release the song Caroline No  on Capitol in his name only.

4-- At this point is where Brian started using Studio musicians instead of the group and used a group of people who were the major studio musicians of the era and had a nick name of The Wreaking Crew .  Members included people like Hal Blaine on Drums and Carol Kaye on Bass.

5--- Brian combine many new instruments together to get the sound he was after . paul McCartney changed his style after listing to the album and claims you have to listen to this album in order to understand music.

6--- Paul McCartney claims the song "God Only Knows " as the greatest single ever made.

I JUST WASN'T MADE FOR THESE TIMES

SMILE - THE UNRELEASED ALBUM

bbsmilp.JPG (55309 bytes)

A Teenage Symphony To God

This is the Most Famous unreleased albums Ever!!! The Beach Boys SMILE album which is only available on bootleg. If you can possible get a copy of this album it is definitely worth it! You can see where Brian intended to take the music industry next!!  It Includes songs such as : Heroes and Villains, Wind Chimes, Wonderful, Mrs. O'Leary's Cow ,Vega-Tables Surfs Up, Do you Like Worms, Tones, Cabin Essence and many other great songs.
The album started off named as DUMB ANGEL and was changed to the name SMILE later. Capitol had made 450K covers for the album and ads were already out when it was decided not to finish the album at this time.
This was the album which Brian developed his modular approach to the recording of songs.
This is also the album which Capitol began production on a lavish gatefold cover with a color booklet inside of it.
For the song Fire which was part of The Element Suite Brian made the group wear fire hats and actually started a small fire in the studio which you can hear the crackling on some recordings of the song.  Brian then blamed this song for starting some fires around the neighborhood of the studio.

BRIAN WILSON DID RELEASE HIS VERSION OF THE ALBUM IN 2004
BUT THE BEACH BOYS MATERIAL WAS NEVER RELEASED EXCEPT IN PARTS ON OTHER ALBUMS

Visit two of our Smile websites at : http://www.bradcoweb.com/rockgroups/smile.htm

AND OUR SMILE CONNECTS WEBSITE!!

http://www.bradcoweb.com/smile/smileconnects.htm

The Main song of the album was suppose to be the Beach Boys hit single which was the first record ever released by Brother Records  called Hereos and Villians . However it was going to have a second side to the song and some other changes which did not come out at this time , but even then it was still a great single.

The album has hundreds of hours on tape in the Beach Boys vault which Capitol has almost released as a box set but nothing has happened as of yet with the release of all this innovative music. Brian and Van Dyke took music to a new level with this album.

smbkcolor.jpg (38780 bytes)

Frank Homles Picture for Brian Wilson's song Fire which is a instrumental song which Brian received his only Grammy . Very ironic the master of vocal harmonies receives his only Grammy for a instrumental .

Brian Wilson finally released his version 37 years later in 2004 as a solo album . I would still love to see the Beach boys material released to the public so they could hear where Brian was taking the music industry.

Brought Another Generation

Below are the three albums which Capitol Released starting in 1974 and brought a entire new generation of Beach Boys fans. The First album released was called Endless Summer and the second was called Spirit Of America and finally the third was called Sunshine Dream and all three albums were double albums.  I say it takes a great group to make three double albums of songs people know!!

Beach Boy Trivia

#1---The Beach Boys started the group in 1961 when their parents went away for the weekend and they used the money which their parents left them to rent instruments and they rehearsed the song " Surfin" When Hite Morgan heard it he recorded them singing the song. The Beach Boys didn't have to pay for studio time.

#2---The Beach Boys were the number one band in the world in 1966 after recording their hit song Good Vibrations and their great album Pet Sounds!

#3---Charles Manson wrote a song for the Beach Boys and was living in Dennis's house for awhile. the song was called "Never Learn Not To Love" which was the B side of the groups single called Bluebirds Over The Mountain.

#4---Brian Stopped touring in 1965. His first replacement was Glen Campbell, then Bruce Johnston took the spot.

#5---Murry Wilson, the boys father was their manager. The Beach Boys were the first group not to have a representitive from the record company to assist them, after the second album. George Martin was the Beatles record company's representitive and producer.

#6--- The Beach Boys were the first group to have their own label . Their label was called Brother Records. The single Heroes and Villains was the first record released on the label.

#7---The Secretary of the Interior , James Watt, stopped the Beach Boys from playing in Washington Monument in 1984 however  after protest from many fans, President Reagan invite the boys to the White House and they played there that year.

#8--- Brian has received many awards including The Greatest Single Ever Made : Good Vibrations and the #1 greatest album of all time " Pet Sounds". He also received his only Grammy for a instrumental song called "Fire" from the Smile album.

#9---Paul McCartney has given credit to the Pet Sounds album as the inspiration to the Beatles album Sgt. Peppers, and also  has said that the song "God Only Knows" is the greatest single ever made. It was rumored that Paul was also on the song Vega-Tables which was going to be on the Beach Boys SMILE album which was never released.

#10---The Beach Boys were the first rock group with their own record Production Company called Sea of Tunes owned by Murray Wilson and Brian Wilson.

#11--- Brian's house in Bel Air CA. became the Beach Boys studio. In this house many funny stories took place as this is where the famous sand box was located in the living with Brian's white grand piano was inside the sandbox.  They also put up a tent inside the dining room so they could have secret meetings. My favorite story is how Brian made a Capital executive get into the built in pool so they could have a meeting with being spied on.

#12--- The release of the album Endless Summer turned a entire new generation onto the groups hit songs and started the group playing their 1980's Washington DC concert on the forth of July to a half a million people.

#13--- The album called "Holland " by the group was actually made in Baambrugge, The Netherlands as the group moved their entire studio there for a scenery change to help them inspired Brian.

#14--- Brian first #1 song was not with The Beach Boys but was a Jan and Dean song called Surf City.

#15--- The album 15 Big ones was promoted as the return of Brian Wilson. Brian did write some good songs for this album such as It's Ok /The Same Song/ had to Phone ya and more.
the group even made a TV special for the album.

#16--- The Beach Boys even had a disco hit from a song they re-did to show how easy it was to make a disco song. In 1979 the group charted on their newly signed label Caribou Records. The song was a remake from their Wild Honey album and they changed it to a disco beat the song was called: "Here Comes The Night"

#17--- Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote the song WARMTH OF THE SUN the day after JFK was shot inspired by the innocent.

#18--- Bruce Johnson joined the group in 1965 but left for awhile in the 70's and re-joined the group in 1979. Bruce only #1 hit which he wrote was not for The Beach Boys but for Barry Manilow and it was the song : I Write The Songs"  It was rumored it was about Brian Wilson.

#19--- Brian Wilson spent most of 1971 thru 1975 in bed and finally had the major push by the record label in 1976 BRIAN IS BACK ads but did not start rehabilitation program under therapist Engene Landy in 1985 that would last till 1988.

#20--- Carl Wilson was the only son to go to their dad's Murray Wilson's  funeral

#21--- Dennis Wilson drowned off his friends sail boat in 1983

#23--- Carl Wilson died of cancer in 1998

#24---- The Beach Boys were the feature group on a Album which Capitol released call SHUTDOWN but there were other car groups on the album.
